Kalawai Adventure organizes "naturalist's expeditions", led by scientists, to some of the most remote and exciting corners of our planet.

Emphasis during the trips is not only on seeing and experiencing, but also on understanding the complex natural interactions at play, and the challenges of preserving unique ecosystems.

Because of the positive impact conservation tourism can have in developing countries, part of our proceeds  are used to directly support conservation projects we visit during each trip. This hands-on, personal approach builds a relationship between travellers and local conservation heroes that will last for years to come.

Our first expedition is to West Papua, Indonesia, the lesser-known half of the Island of New Guinea. We travel aboard a beautiful "Phinisi" schooner to explore the islands of Raja Ampat, land on the wild beaches of the Bird's Head Peninsula where giant leatherbacks nest, and swim with whale sharks in secluded Cendrawasih Bay...

Drone footage of the Wayag island group (West Papua, Indonesia). Traveling aboard the Putiraja, Wayag was one of our stops in northern Raja Ampat. We continued on to the Bird's Head Peninsula to see leatherback sea turtles nest at Jamursba Medi. We then sailed to Cendrawasih Bay and its whale sharks. Cendrawasih Bay was the last leg of Kalawai Adventure's expedition to West Papua. Whales sharks, mostly juvenile males, congregate around "Bagan" fishing platforms (lift nets). Fishermen feed the sharks offal and the sharks attract tourists, providing local communities a powerful incentive to protect these magnificent animals (as opposed to chopping their fins off for a one-time benefit). A neat example of how well-managed tourism can contribute to conservation. Bagans are clever light traps that consist of a square grid of about 25x25m made with strong bamboo poles which is mounted on a single wooden ship. Thick ropes connect its four corners to heavy anchors which keep the Bagan level and stable. Bright lights attract fish, causing them to aggregate right above a lift net... Whale sharks have learned to wait near the Bagans to eat up the fish offal that's thrown overboard.
